How to use the email migrator

Are you planning to migrate your email data from one source to another seamlessly? Hostingly’s Email Migrator tool makes the process smoother than ever. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the various options and steps involved in using the Email Migrator effectively.

Understanding the Options:

At the top of the Email Migrator page, you’ll find several options that allow you to tailor your migration process to your specific needs. Let’s clarify what each of these options does:

  1. Just Verbose (No Real Sync): This option provides detailed information and logs without performing any actual synchronization.
  2. Just Checks Credentials: Use this option to validate and ensure the correctness of your login credentials without executing a full sync.
  3. Just Presents Folder Sizes: Selecting this option will display the sizes of folders within your email accounts, helping you gauge the space required for migration.
  4. Just Create Folders: This option allows you to create the folder structure in the destination mailbox without moving any messages.
  5. IMPORTANT: You do not need to select any of these options if you are ready to sync an entire mailbox.

Additionally, there is an option to “Show/Hide Extra Parameters.” When activated, this option reveals two additional fields:

  • Strict Sync (Deletes Messages on Destination Mailbox): Enabling this option will delete messages on the destination mailbox that do not exist in the source mailbox, ensuring a complete sync.
  • Sub Folders: Use this option if you want to specifically sync subfolders instead of the entire mailbox.

Completing the Main Fields:

To initiate the email migration, you’ll need to fill in the following main fields:

  • Login (usually an email address): Enter the email address associated with your source mailbox.
  • Password: Input the password for the source mailbox.
  • IMAP Source Server Name or IP Address (Source and Destination): Specify the IMAP server name or IP address for both the source and destination mailboxes.

Executing the Migration:

Once you’ve filled in the necessary information, you’ll find two buttons below:

  • Sync or Resync: Click this button to start the synchronisation process or to resynchronise if needed.
  • Abort: Use this button to cancel the ongoing synchronisation if required.

Tracking Progress:

Below the buttons, you’ll find a progress bar that displays the status of the migration. The sync console provides real-time information about the synchronisation process, while the abort console allows you to halt the operation if necessary.

Reviewing the Log:

Finally, at the bottom of the page, you’ll find a complete log of the processed job. This log provides a detailed record of the migration, helping you review the results and troubleshoot any issues if they arise.
